Trends are derived from text analysis of Shipping Forecast data from the past year.
Maximum and minimum wind speeds are determined from the largest and smallest numeric wind values quoted in each area forecast.
The average of the minimum and maximum wind speeds for each area (as defined above), for each month.
Figures indicate the number of forecasts for each sea area which include the visibility keywords "very poor", "poor", "moderate", and "good", expressed as a percentage of the total. Forecasts may contain more than one of those keywords.
Visibility ratings are calculated by allocating points to each area forecast depending on whether it mentions "very poor" (1 point), "poor" (2 points), "moderate" (3 points), or "good" (4 points). Where a forecast contains more than one of those keywords, an average rating is used.
